Missing teeth can affect your self esteem and make simple things like eating a painful experience. But dentures are a traditional solution to replace missing teeth and are often the affordable option for many patients. Our team here at Precision Dental wants to help you restore your teeth and your smile, so you can enjoy the quality of life you deserve.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic dental appliances that replace a series or an entire row of missing teeth. They can fit right on the gums and in some cases over teeth, and are secured with a bonding material, so you can enjoy a functional bite and improved smile.
Dentures are custom created for each patient and come in a variety of styles such as temporary, traditional removable, and implant supported. Materials used to create dentures include acrylic, chrome, and acrylic resin. The materials used will be unique to the patient and the type of dentures needed.
While dentures are the traditional solution to replace missing teeth, today’s dentures are greatly improved in design and technology from those of the past. With improved look and function, they are a viable option for many patients to regain their smile and improve their oral health.
Benefits of Dentures to Replace Missing Teeth
When teeth are missing, it can affect your health and self-esteem. Not only will you experience difficulty with eating and chewing, but talking can be a problem.
Missing teeth can cause any remaining teeth to shift out of place, and the jawbone will shrink or deteriorate, causing a sallow and aged appearance. But replacing them with dentures can provide these benefits:

Denture Styles
Partial dentures
replace a few missing teeth and serve numerous functions including preventing other teeth from shifting, aesthetically improve a smile, and restore ability to talk and chew food
Implant supported dentures
are a more permanent solution to replace missing teeth and include a denture made of a row of artificial teeth that are secured to a few dental implants to hold them in place
How Traditional Dentures Work
While implant supported dentures remain on the implants, traditional dentures are made to be removed each night for cleaning the prosthesis and your mouth.
Along with your saliva, a natural suction between your gums and the dentures keeps them in place. Some patients may use a special cream for extra bonding.
The downside of dentures is that they may irritate the gums as they move or slide about. This is why regular dental visits are important so we can monitor the health of your gums and make adjustments to the dentures, if needed.
Caring for Your Dentures
To keep your mouth healthy and your dentures in great shape, daily oral hygiene is the most important thing you can do.
Your dentist will provide customized instructions for your situation, and following them can keep your smile looking great and lower the chance of problems.
Implant supported dentures
can be brushed twice every day just like natural teeth. Take extra care around the gumline and talk to your dentist about using an intraoral cleaner for detailed cleaning.
If any implants feel loose or uncomfortable, call us right away and schedule a visit. Remember that diagnosing and treating dental problems early often means easier and more cost-effective treatments.
Traditional dentures
will need to be removed each night to clean them. Place them in a glass of cold water while you sleep, allowing your gums to rest and heal from any rubbing or movement of the dentures that took place during the day.
Ask your dentist about denture cleaning tablets or for any solution that should be used for extra strength cleaning and to keep your dentures and smile in top shape.
