Do I Need to Remove My Wisdom Teeth?
Hi, I’m Dr Billy Choi, the principal dentist at Precision Dental here in Fortitude Valley.
Last week, one of our long-term local patients, Martin from Newstead, came in for a regular check-up and clean. During our consultation, he mentioned that his friend recently removed his wisdom teeth. So he asked whether he should get his wisdom teeth extracted as well.
People are always curious whether they need their wisdom teeth removed, so I decided to make this short video sharing with you what I shared with Martin.
Not all patients need their wisdom teeth removed. I recommend removing the wisdom teeth only if they are causing problems.
The main problem wisdom teeth cause is that because they’re so far back, they are very hard to clean. They have very high retention and accumulation of food particles and plaque.
And the most common discomfort or pain patients experience is an acute infection or abscess of the surrounding gum called pericoronitis, so they decay more frequently.
Poor hygiene of wisdom teeth can also contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. So if a patient is experiencing these issues from their wisdom teeth, then it warrants the extraction.
However, in saying that, some people have good access to those back teeth and clean them quite well. If the wisdom teeth have erupted in an upright position and with good oral hygiene, they don’t necessarily require extraction.
So I hope you’ve found this short video useful and have gained a better insight into wisdom teeth extraction.
